How To Style a Monochrome Outfit

Feb 27, 2023

Monochrome outfits are something I appreciate as I get more decisive about my wardrobe. I recently wrote about defining your personal style, and one of the ways to get more comfortable with styling yourself is starting with basics. Your wardrobe basics should always include neutral colors, and neutrals segue into monochrome. Monochrome outfits are an easy way to elevate your everyday style. Monochrome by definition is a single color or hue. Monochromes are a simple way to pull together an outfit.

Color

The first step in putting together a monochrome outfit is picking a color. Go with a color you already like wearing. Once you decide the color family pick a couple different hues to wear. This allows you to keep with the theme of the outfit without being too matchy matchy. For my monochrome outfit I chose a lighter shade and darker shade of tan.

This allows you to add balance to the outfit as well. Both pieces I chose look great on me individually, so putting them together makes sense. You want to be mindful that the color you chose compliments your skin tone. If a color is too warm or cool toned, you can end up looking washed out or dull. Color theory comes into play here, and is a good point of reference for learning to pick colors that work well for you.

Pattern

Next, try mixing patterns together for your outfit. My pants are a solid shade of tan, while my top is a Henley with a ribbed pattern and front buttons. The contrast helps draw attention to the eye, and keeps the outfit from looking too dull. You can get the same effect with prints or block patterns.

Accessories

There are two options to accessorizing a monochromatic look, go big and bold or keep it neutral. If you enjoy a pop of color like me, now is the time to add a bold earring or statement shoe. If you want to keep it simple, a pair of diamond studs or pearls pull together a classic look. If you want to go bold, a bright color helps break up the uniformity of the outfit.
