I’ve talked about my love of reading before. I often set ambitious reading goals every year. It’s Black History Month and I want to put the focus on Black authors. Everyday is a good day to buy black, but especially now. As a Black woman I know firsthand that we have to work twice as hard at everything. It’s important to me to showcase Black authors and acknowledge their contributions. These are 5 of my favorite books by black authors. I have a mix of fiction, non-fiction, as well as some lifestyle books here.
Fiction
The Idea of you : Robinne Lee – Whenever anyone asks for a book recommendation, this is what I give them. It’s centered around a 40-something mom of a tween who takes her daughter to see her favorite pop band. She ends up meeting the lead singer who is half her age, and starts a world wind romance. This book is so wonderfully written. It gives an interesting perspective on an age gap romance. It’s being turned into a movie and I can’t wait to see it!
The Wedding Date By: Jasmine Guillory – This is a lighthearted romance novel perfect for anyone new to the genre. It centers around Alexa a lawyer, who gets trapped in an elevator with Drew, a surgeon. She agrees to be his fake girlfriend for a wedding he’s attending and it goes up from there. This is the first in a series of 3 interconnected novels.
Non-Fiction
Hunger By: Roxane Gay– This memoir is a beautiful, heartbreaking, memoir of weight, body-image, and everything that comes with living in a fat body. I had never had anyone articulate my feelings about being fat as well or as accurately until this book. It is not a light read, but necessary and introspective. Trigger warning for sexual assault.
An Intimate Detail By: Cora Harrington – If you wear lingerie, like history, and/or just want to learn more about how undergarments are made, get this book. It is a comprehensive guide on all things lingerie. Cora discusses the history of lingerie, different patterns and styles, as well as how to be a more informed shopper.
The Way Home: Kardea Brown– This wonderful cookbook is the first by Kardea, Host of Food Network’s Delicious Miss Brown . It is a combination of low country cooking, family recipes, and southern cuisine, which is right up my alley. Kardea’s bubbly personality shines thru in her book just as much as her show. Her recipes are healthy and approachable.
These are 5 of my favorite books by Black Authors. Obviously there a tons more out there, but this are personal favorites of mine. A great place to start, and reminder to buy black!
