Spooky season is one of my favorite times of year. I love when the weather cools down, and the leaves change. Fall has always been my favorite time of year, and to me October is when it really kicks off. I love Halloween, always have and nothing gets me in the Halloween spirit like a scary movie. I’ve been watching them the past couple of weeks in preparation of Halloween, so I’m sharing what to watch during spooky season.
What To Watch During Spooky Season
Scream
The scream franchise is one of my favorites. It really ushered in a different type of scary movie, and turned the expectations of what a scary movie is on it’s head. There’s tons to watch, but my recommendations are the Original, Scream 3, and Scream 5.
The Craft
Another cult classic, that holds up surprisingly well. Teenage girls, witchcraft, and revenge, no better combo for a Halloween movie night. A reimagined version was released in 2020, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the original.
The Conjuring
Now this one is scary AF. If you genuinely like to be scared, watch this. Maybe not too late at night though. The story of a family who’s daughter is possessed. They call in the pros, Ed and Lorraine Warren to help them out. It’s based off a true story, which adds another layer of creepy.
Casper
For a family friendly watch, or if you aren’t into scary movies, Casper is a must. A teenage girl and her dad move into an old haunted house to investigate the paranormal, and find it to be occupied by the ghost of a kid and his 3 uncles. A canon event from my childhood is when Casper takes human form and asks Kat if he can keep her. If you are a 90’s kid, than Casper is a must for spooky season viewing.
The Ring
In the early 2000’s there was a slew of Japanese horror movie remakes and The Ring was the most popular. A reporter investigates the death of a teenage girl who rumor has it died because of an urban legend and a creepy video. A core memory is when Samara crawls out of the tv to kill, it shook 12 year old me, and still creeps me out today.
The Haunting of Hill House
If you’re more inclined to watch tv shows, then this is hands down my favorite spooky tv series. Based of a book, it tells the story of a family who’s mother dies under weird circumstances when their kids and how it effects them. The estranged siblings reunite when their sister dies under the same creepy circumstances, and their force to face their fears and the truth behind what haunts them.
Interview with the Vampire
One of my personal favorites, and based on the book by Anne Rice. It’s the story of the vampire Louis, who decides to allow a reporter to interview him about his life as a vampire. More campy than scary, it’s delightful. Tom cruise plays Lestat, Louis’s maker and long time companion, and you get to see peak fine Brad Pitt with long hair.
HalloweenTown
I watched Disney channel a ton growing up, so I have a special appreciation for a disney channel original movie. This was one of my favs growing up. It’s about a teenage girl who finds out she’s a descendant of a family of witches, and her grandmother lives in a town where it is halloween year round. As she learns how to use and navigate her power, she has to join forces with her family to defeat a warlock who’s slowly turning the townspeople to stone.
House on Haunted Hill
This is one of those cult classics that doesn’t get talked about much. It’s a remake of the 1960’s Vincent price movie. A wealthy couple throws a lavish birthday party in an old sanitarium, and invites a bunch of strangers as party guests. There locked in and if they make it thru the night they get a check for 1 million dollars.
These are some of my favorite movies to watch during spooky season. Some you all know, a few I think are hidden gems. If you need something to get you in the Halloween spirit, I hope you check these out!
