In honor of the 25th anniversary of Sex and The City, I’ve decided share life lessons learned from Samantha Jones. I was too young for the show when it premiered and didn’t watch the series in full till I was in college. I recently rewatched the series in order from start to finish and was it a revelation. Some things hit different watching it as a grown woman. With that being said Samantha Jones is my favorite character, and I’m here’s everything I learned from her.
Don’t Worry About What Everyone Else Thinks of You
Samantha went where she wanted, wore what she wanted, slept with who she wanted to….. you get the drift. No matter the situation she kept her head held high and refused to let anyone shame her. After all she did tell Carrie if she worried about what every bitch in New York thought about her she would never leave the house. People are going to talk about you, they’re going to make assumptions, they’re going to judge. You can worry yourself with the what ifs and the thought of being judged, or you can just live.
Relationships May Last A Lifetime, But Friends are Forever
Samantha was a girls girl, through and through. She took up for Charlotte over the stolen baby name, supported Miranda when she decided to keep her baby, and fed Carrie when she was too heartbroken with grief over Big to get out of bed. She didn’t hold onto anger, and understood how important it was to show up for your friends. We could all use a friend like Samantha in our corner. I mean how many people do you know that would loan you 20k to buy an apartment?
IF You Can’t Find Mr. Right, Go For Mr. Right Now
Samantha Jones was the OG hot girl. She wasn’t one for relationships or the one, but she was one for mr. one night. We can learn alot about sexual satisfaction and bridging the orgasm gap from her. She didn’t really have a type, and she was willing to give advice and guidance to the other girls. She got slut shamed–alot. Samantha took the high road, which is more than what some of the girls deserved at times. I truly feel that her character opened the door for female characters today to talk openly about sex and pleasure onscreen without judgement.
Always Choose Yourself
My favorite Samantha quote of all time is ” I love you, but I love me more” Life changing words right there. If it comes down to you or someone else, always always choose yourself. Don’t ever put yourself through hell for a man who wouldn’t do the same for you. Men are conditioned to chose themselves, and women are conditioned to sacrifice and put everyone else first. Not Samantha though, she knew when she had enough and when to walk away from things or people who were no longer serving her. You will never ever regret betting on yourself.
